2017 Flag Football Season



MHFF email #10 (10/8/17)

1) All teams make the playoffs on October 28.  First place plays second place, 3rd plays 4th, 5th plays 6th and 7th plays 8th.  

2) I need lots of 6' Costco tables for the end of year party.  If you have some that we can borrow, please email me.  We cannot put $4000 of food on the grass!

3) Remember to bring some desserts to share with the league for the party (right after the awards ceremony at 4 pm on October 28)

4) Photo packages (that you purchased) can be picked up this Saturday from 920-200 pm next to the field 1/2 concessions.  Please have 1 coach or team Mom/Dad pick up for the entire team (and then distribute).  Team photos will be distributed with the trophies at the end of the season.

MHFF email #9 (10/2/17)

Please remember that this is youth flag football and all the referees and coaches are not only human but also volunteers.  Half of the teams lose every week and 7 out of 8 teams in each division will not win the championship at the end of the year but there are many valuable lessons that your kids (and maybe yourselves) can learn from winning and losing (and it's not "The refs cheated us!")  Please stay positive!

If you have an early game that day, please come back and help us celebrate the season and thank some of the volunteers.  The league will provide $4000 worth of food and drinks.  

We need some help however.  We need
1) 6 ft Costco tables (please write your name on them) and pick them up at 6 pm
2) 2-3 volunteers with big cars to pick up 85 pizzas from Costco at 330 pm.
3) 2-3 volunteers with big cars to pick up ice for the party (bring by 330 pm)

4) Players to bring some desserts (for 10) to share with the league

Parking will be very limited so please come early and carpool if possible.

-14th annual MH Halloween Parade (5th organized by MHFF)
Sunday October 29, 1 pm at Bethany Park

Description:  Bring your ghosts, goblins, super heroes and princesses and march with them in the longest running family event in the history of Mountain House (originally started by the MH Mothers Club who organized the first 9 events).  The Parade will be followed by a Best Costume contest.  Continue the tradition.  Get some candy.  Win some prizes.

Your kids will get to trick or treat at various stations around the park set up by various sponsors and local groups and friendly neighbors.

MHFF email #8 (9/23/17)

Highest scoring game in the history of MHFF occurred in the novice division today when the Lions beat the Giants 61-60 in OT to notch their first win. 

Please check in with the admin at the field 5 min before the game when it's your turn to volunteer.  Im still having to look for people every week.  If your team is the home team, you will need to videotape the game.  Please watch this brief 4 minute instructional video before your game.

Again, please stay positive on the sidelines.  Other people can hear the things you say.  When you signed up your kid(s), you agreed to abide by our code of conduct.  If I ask you to stop doing something or saying something, please just stop.  Don't try to argue with me and definitely do not respond with "this is a public park, I can do what I want" because that will probably get you and your kid kicked out of the league.

MHFF email #7 (9/9/17)


Some great games yesterday including a 5 OT nail-biter and a 46-43 shoot-out in the varsity division.  I was nervous even though I dont have any kids in the division.  😨

 

Oh and I turned on the fans on the Altamont to bring the temperature down a little.  😇

 

And yes I'm in the process of dealing with the mud pit on field 1.  😣

 

Please continue to be positive on the sidelines.  Negative comments towards anyone are not welcome in this league.  

 

Please be ready to videotape when it is your week to volunteer by watching the instructional video prior to coming. Most of the kids (and adults) love watching the games on Youtube.

MHFF email #6 (9/2/17)

It was a record day for sure. In addition to the record temperature, we had our first ever game cancellation and our first ever forfeit (due to not having enough players) in 9 years!

Hope the weather chills out next week. I cant wait for fall football!

Order forms should be going out to you this week (but you can order online without the form) and there will be extra forms at the area next week.

Please continue to be positive out there and do not verbally abuse the referees and my sympathy for ref complaints is very low. The only people allowed to complain about the refs are the guys who ref 6 games a day.

Yes we DO have games next week (9/2)!  It's gonna be hot again so please bring plenty of drinks for your kids and yourself (or you can buy drinks at the concessions)

Continue to stay positive and cheer for both sides.

Parents/spectators-Please stop "heckling" the refs.  They are ALL volunteers.  Please do not make me take action to stop this behavior.

Coaches-Please make sure your volunteer know what they are doing (video or concessions) each week and check in with the admin prior to the game.  I'm having to look for volunteers too much.

MHFF email #4 (8/20/17)

Awesome first week of the season.  Lots of great competition.  I felt like burnt toast after spending 10 hours out there.

A little about winning and losing ....
While this is a sport and we will always keep score and standings and some (upto 6) teams may not win any games, please continue to focus on having fun, improving each week and making new friends.

MHFF email #3 (8/13/17)

1) The first game of the season is next Saturday August 19th.  Come early as parking is often limited and you may have to park far away from the field.  Please sit on the parent side (by the trees at the park and by the fences at the school) 2 yards away from the sidelines (for player safety).  Enjoy the competition and cheer for both sides. 

*Fields 1 & 2 are at Bethany Park and Fields 3 & 4 are at Bethany School.  The game schedule is on the website.

2) Abusing refs (or admins or coaches) - Dont do it.  I have a hard enough time getting enough refs and coaches each year to cover all the games.  You (and your kids) may be removed from the league if your behavior crosses the line.

3) We need more referees.  If you or your high school kids can help, please email me (or talk to me) and volunteer to referee.  See #2 above.

4) We will have snacks and drinks at our concession stands.  All proceeds from the concessions go back to the league to keep the fees low for the kids so more can participate.

5) While the league will provide some water, please bring water/drinks for your kids (especially JV and varsity who need more water) as it is usually pretty hot in August/September.

6) Since some of you will have to video the games (home team volunteer), please watch this brief 4 minute instructional video before your game.


7) If you are the volunteer of the day for your team, please check in with the field admin (red shirt) 5 to 10  min before your game.  See below.

Ages:  4-14 (birthdays from Nov 1, 2002-Dec 31, 2012)
 
Registration Period:  March 1-July 8, 2017 (or until we're reach 480 players so please don't wait.  We were full in June of last year.)

Assessments:  There will be no assessments this year.

Initial roster:  July 8 (or earlier if we have 480 prior to July 8)

Final roster:  July 12

Preseason July 17-August 18, 2017

Season:  Saturday, August 19-October 28, 2017

Photo Days:  September 9, 2017
 
Practice days:  Weekly, day(s) and time(s) to be determined (you can make requests when you register).  Practices start the week of July 17.
 
Number and Length of Practices:  Min of one 60 minute practice a week.  Max of two practices a week.  Max of 90 minutes per practice.  
 
Length of Games:  Two 25 minute halves with a 3 minute half-time

Playing Time:  50% rule is in effect this year.  Every player will need to play a minimum of 50% of the game.  See FAQ below for details.

Division Start Times:  Jr Novice 830 am, Novice 940 am, Freshman 1050 amSophomore 1200 noon, JV 110 pm, Varsity 220 pm

Format:  Five on five, non-contact flag football.

Cost:  $100 (cash, check payable to Mountain House Flag Football or via PayPal to registration@mhflagfootball.com)

Jerseys:  Players will receive a personalized jersey (with last name and selected number) and a pair of league shorts.
 
Equipment:  Cleats with nonmetal spikes are strongly recommended.  Footballs, flags and cones will be provided to the coaches for use during the season

Coaches:  Please contact me if you are interested in becoming a volunteer head coach (high school kids can get volunteer hours for coaching).  Assistant coaches are appointed by the head coaches.  All coaches, however, must complete the registration form, pass the rule test and referee one game a week.

Volunteers (parents):  To continue to keep our fees low and to continue to provide concessions and videos of each game, we ask that each family provide 1-2 volunteer hours (age 13 or older) per kid in the league per season.

Frequently Asked Questions:  
1) How do I register my kid(s) to play or myself to volunteer as a coach?  See sections below.

2) How are the players (and coaches) assigned to teams?  Once we fill all or most of our spots, I take the entire list in order of birthdays and divided by 6 (the number of divisions).  Then, we make some movements based on requests and sometimes ability and size and experience.  We have NO set ages for divisions.

3) Will I get my requests?  Although historically, over 90% of requests are granted, some of you will not because sometimes it is impossible (Joe wants to be with his friend Mike but they requested different coaches or different practice days) and sometimes I will not grant requests if I think the teams will be very uneven if the request is granted.

5) What will the players get?  In addition to the personalized jersey and league shorts, each player will get a participation trophy and a team photo at the end of the year.

6) When will the players get their shorts and jerseys?  Shorts will be distributed by the coach at the first practice.  These are no personalized so they can be exchanged in the first two weeks.  Jerseys have to be personalized so distribution occurs the week before the first game.  These are NOT exchangeable.  Additional shorts may be purchased for $15.  Replacement jerseys may be purchased for $25.

7) What will the coaches get?  In addition a photo plaque at the end of the season, the head coach will get a free team polo at the beginning of the season.  Assistant coaches may buy the team polo for $25.

8) What is the 50% rule?  The 50% rule will be in effect again this year.  All non-injured players must play at least 50% of the game (unless there is a special commissioner exemption).  

50% rule in detail
A) If you have 10 players (we'll name them 1-10), it's pretty straight forward.
You have 3 options:

1) 1-5 on offense the entire game and 6-10 on defense the entire game
2) 1-5 on offense 1st half but defense 2nd half.  6-10 opposite
3) 1-5 on offense 1st half but in the the 2nd half some of the players go on defense and some stay on offense.  6-10 opposite.

No switching is allowed during a half if you have 10 healthy players.

B) If you have 9 players (we'll name them 1-9) or 8 or 7
Same rules as above
but in addition
If 1-5 is on offense and 6-9 is on defense
someone from 1-5 needs to play defense of course.
It cannot be the same person every series.
For example, 1st defensive series, 5 plus 6-9 are on defense
The next defensive series, 5 cannot play again.  You have to use someone from 1-4.
You do not have to rotate through 1-5 but just cannot use the same player on consecutive series.

9) Can you challenge a referee call?  Only coaches can challenge a rule mistake but not judgement calls (tackling, holding, pass interference, etc).  If the referee does not correct the mistake, the coach can contact the administrator on the field.

10) Where can I find lost items?  We collect a lot of lost and found items each year and put it next to the shed on fields 1 & 2.  Please put your kid's name on water bottles, sweatshirts, etc.

11)  How can we help raise money for the league?  
-League T-shirts (football and cheer) are on sale for $12 each.  Hoodies are on sale for $25 each.  Red MHFF caps are on sale for $10 each.  All proceeds go back to the league to reduce the cost of registration fees for the kids.  Please send me an e-mail if you would like to buy something.

12) What is Spirit Day?  We ask (not required though) the players and cheerleaders to wear their jerseys and uniforms to school on fridays during the season to show their team spirit.

Accidental Waiver and Release of Liability (AWRL)

I acknowledge that flag football and cheer leading is an extreme test of a person’s physical and mental limits and that participation in a flag football and cheer leading event carries with it the potential for death, serious injury, disability and property loss/damage.  The risks include, but are not limited to, those caused by terrain, facilities, temperature, weather, condition of participants, equipment, vehicular traffic, actions of other people including, but not limited to, participants and spectators.  I certify that I am physically fit to participate in these events and have not been advised otherwise by a qualified medical person.  I consent to receive medical treatment which may be deemed advisable in the event of injury, accident and/or illness during these events and to allow photos and videos to be taken and posted on the league websites and related sites.  With full understanding of the potential risks, I assume all of the risks of participating in any way in these events. 

I hereby take action for myself, my executors, heirs, next of kin, successors, and assigns as follows:

(A) I WAIVE, RELEASE AND DISCHARGE from any and all liability for my death, serious injury, disability and property loss/damage except that which is the result of gross negligence and/or wanton misconduct of persons or entities listed below: MOUNTAIN HOUSE FLAG FOOTBALL, INC., MOUNTAIN HOUSE COMMUNITY SERVICES DISTRICT, LAMMERSVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT, their directors, officers, employees, volunteers, representatives, agents and other participants and spectators;

(B) I AGREE NOT TO SUE any of entities or persons listed above for any of the claims or liabilities that I have waived, released or discharged herein; and

(C) I INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS the entities or persons mentioned above from any and all liabilities or claims made by myself, other individuals or entities as a result of any of my actions.

I acknowledge that this AWRL form will be used by the event organizers, in which I may participate, and that it will govern my actions and responsibilities at said events.  This AWRL shall be construed broadly to provide a release and waiver to the maximum extent permissible under applicable law.  This AWRL shall apply to each and every time I participate in these events.

If participant is less than 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must execute the foregoing AWRL for and on behalf of the minor named herein.

I, the parent or legal guardian of the participant, will execute the foregoing AWRL for and on behalf of the minor named herein.  I represent that I have legal capacity and authority to act for and on behalf of the minor named herein.  I have also read and understand the AWRL and have reviewed them with the minor named herein.  I hereby bind myself, the minor named herein and all other assigns to the terms of the AWRL.  I fully consent to his/her participation in these events.
